Certain landfill operators are required to report formula-based estimates of their methane emissions to the EPA Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program. Industrious Labs analyzed the latest data from 2022, and found that in 44 states, municipal solid waste landfills make up the largest share of industrial sector landfill methane emissions (industrial sector includes MSW landfills, chemical manufacturing, food processing, minerals manufacturing, petroleum and natural gas systems, pulp and paper, petroleum refineries, mining and other).
