biden administration announces $100M in recycling infrastructure projects
On September 13, 2023, the Biden Administration announced over $100 million in projects that will expand recycling infrastructure and waste management systems across the country - representing EPA’s largest recycling investment in 30 years thanks in part to one-time stimulus dollars.
25 communities were selected to receive grants totaling more than $73 million under the newly created Solid Waste Infrastructure for Recycling funding opportunity. And states and territories will receive about $32 million for states and territories to improve solid waste management planning, data collection and implementation of plans.
For example, Iowa City received $4M to expand its existing compost facility by building on current programs and increasing processing capacity from 15,000 tons per year to 20,000 tons per year. This expansion will increase landfill diversion, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and allow more residents from Johnson County, Kalona and Riverside cities to use composting services.
